DGS defeats Willowbrook!

On Saturday, Sept.26th, the DGS girls cross country team hosted Willowbrook HS for our 2nd HOME meet and the 4th WSC Gold dual meet of the season. DGS raced Willowbrook on our new campus course. With cooler than expected weather, the Mustangs prevailed in the varsity race by the score 15-50 over the Warriors.

Sophia McNerney (Jr) remains undefeated on the season, taking the individual victory. Sophia led the race from start to finish, really pushing the final mile. Sophia’s time of 17:18 was a PR and a new course record for the DGS 3.0 mile course. Kelsey Casella (Jr) also ran a season best time of 18:31 to finish 2nd overall. Rebecca Diddia (Sr) ran another smart race along with Alex Spang (Jr) as the two of them kept close to Kelsey for the first 2 miles. Rebecca held on to finish 3rd with a time of 19:15 with Alex not too far behind in 4th in 19:31. Madi Sisson (Jr) outleaned Nora Joy (So) at the finish line to take 5th while Nora finished in 6th. Both ended with identical times of 19:47. Madelyn Sumlin (So) also ran her PR with her 7th place effort, breaking 20:00 for the first time (19:53).

In the second race of the morning, Gabby Okuku (Fr) and Elizabeth Laverty (Fr) ran together to set the early pace ahead of a pack of Mustangs. In the 2nd half of the race, Bella Lapacek (Jr) joined them and eventually broke away for the individual win, placing 1st in 22:06. Gabby and Elizabeth finished in 2nd and 3rd with nearly identical times of 22:45 and 22:47.  Amelia Biczek (Fr) started further back, but began to move up for the remainder of the race to place 4th in 22:56. Abbey McGinley (Fr) and Marin Atseff (Fr) continued to run strong with season best times to finish 5th and 6th for the Mustangs (23:48 and 23:55).

At the end of the day, 49 Mustangs crossed the finish line in the 2 races with 45 of them setting season best times. Out of that group, 30 DGS girls ran lifetime PRs. It was a very successful meet and extended the 2020 win streak to four! DGS full team results can be found on the CC Schedule/Results page. Complete race results can be found on Athletic.net. On Friday, the varsity top group will race cross town rivals, Downers Grove North at their stadium track. On Saturday, the remainder of the team will take on the Morton Mustangs and attempt to continue our conference win streak.
