On Monday afternoon, the DGS girls cross country team hosted our only home meet of the season. The meet was a conference triangular versus Morton and Addison Trail. There was a bit of delay to the start of the race as Morton hit a lot of traffic on the way to O’Brien Park. But it was worth the wait to see a trio of Mustangs sweep the top 3 spots and easily defeat both conference foes. Rachel Rodi (So) took the lead right from the gun, led the entire race, and took the win in 20:05. The sophomore is starting to come on strong at the right time and hopes to make an impact in our bigger varsity races coming up. Sophie Ring (So) and Sophia Nelson (So) ran together for much of the race until Sophie pulled away over the last 1/2 mile. Ring finished 2nd in 20:28, while Nelson placed 3rd in 20:38.
Skyler Tomecki (Jr) and Arianna DeLeon (Jr) ran a similar race. The duo stayed together for most of the race until Skyler pulled ahead in final 400m. Two Addison Trail runners split the pair in the final stages as Tomecki finished in 4th place in 21:10, while DeLeon placed 7th in 21:16. Lindsay Spear (Jr) and Madelyn Sumlin (Jr) completed the Mustang scoring with their 8th and 9th places finishes in 21:39 and 21:44, respectively. Overall, DGS placed 17 runners in the top 20 places in the 3.0 mile race!
The meet also served as our Senior Night, as we recognized 18 seniors in front of the team and their families. It’s been a strange journey for this group with the last 18 months of the pandemic. But they have persevered through it all and provided much needed leadership to our team. This group of athletes have seen no worse than a 5th place finish at State during their last 3 years, and hopefully will finish up their final season with another top 5 state team.
