DGS victory over Leyden!

On Saturday, Sept.12th, the DGS girls cross country team traveled to Leyden HS for the 2nd WSC Gold dual meet of the season. DGS raced Leyden on their new 3.0 mile campus course. As the rain poured down, the Mustangs prevailed in the varsity race by the score 15-50 over the Eagles.

Kelsey Casella (Jr) earned the individual victory, leading the race from start to finish. Kelsey’s time of 18:59 was an outstanding effort without spikes on the slick, rain soaked 3.0 mile course. Rebecca Diddia (Sr) ran a smart race as she kept close to Kelsey for the first 2 miles. Rebecca held on to finish 2nd with a time of 19:31. Renee Kowalski (Jr) ran her first race of the season and overcame a slip and fall to finish 3rd in 20:07. Renee out-leaned Madi Sisson (Jr) at the finish as the two of them sprinted into the chute. Madi finished with an identical time of 20:07 in her 4th place effort. Nora Joy (So) was the final Mustang scorer as she ran with Madi for much of the race before falling back some in the final half mile. Nora earned her 5th place finish with a time of 20:26. Sophia Nelson (Fr) made a strong push in the last mile to close the gap and finished in 6th place with a season best time of 20:34.

The rain kept falling in the JV1 race, but Serilda McNerney (Jr) did not let that bother her as she led the entire race en route to her individual first place finish in 21:53. Emma Lopez (Jr) and Lindsay Spear (So) chased Serilda for much of the race and ended up sprinting together towards the chute, finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively with times of 22:20 and 22:21. Madolyn Werner (Jr) and newcomer, Angie Hernandez (Jr) were the next Mustangs into the chute, finishing 4th and 5th to complete the perfect DGS score of 15 points. Madolyn ran 23:05 and Angie was close behind in 23:14.

In the final race of the morning, Chloe Dawson (Sr) and Summer Kruk (Jr) ran together to set the early pace ahead of a pack of Mustangs. In the 2nd half of the race, Chloe broke away and was able to hold on for the individual win, placing 1st in 25:20. Abbey McGinley (Fr) was running in 3rd for most of the race, before challenging and eventually passing Summer to place 2nd in 25:54. Summer ran a good race to finish among the top 3 for the 2nd week in a row with a time of 26:09. Grace Stapleton (Fr) also mirrored last week’s effort with a strong push in the last mile of the race to finish in 4th place (26:14). Maddie Duitsman (Sr) battled with Kaylie McDaniel (Fr) and just edged her out at the finish for 5th place. Maddie ran 26:25, while Kaylie finished with 26:26.

Despite the rainy weather, it was a successful trip to Leyden and extended the 2020 win streak to two! DGS full team results can be found on the CC Schedule/Results page.
