On Saturday, the Mustangs traveled to Fenton HS to compete in the Fenton Earlybird Invite. The varsity team finished 2nd out of 23 teams. Glenbrook South won the meet with 96 pts, followed closely by DGS with 99 pts, and Vernon Hills with 108 pts. Cross-town rival Downers North finished 5th with 146 pts. Katie Stapleton (Jr) and Michaela Hackbarth (Sr) led the team with top 10 finishes in the 3-mile race. Katie was 6th in 18:39 while Michaela finished 9th in 18:58. The varsity scoring 5 was rounded out with Emily Qualizza (Sr) in 20th running 19:30, Liz Alcantara (Sr) in 21st running 19:32, and Kara Petersen (Jr) in 43rd running 20:08.

In the 2nd race of the day, the Frosh-Soph team ran equally as well finishing in 2nd place behind a tough Prospect team 34-66, but far ahead of 3rd place Hononegah with 102 pts. Freshman, Becky Versaskas, dominated the competition winning the race in a F/S meet record time of 19:03. The Mustangs had two other top 10 finishes with Natalie Olsen (So) placing 5th in 19:54, and Olivia Duax (Fr) placing 7th in 20:11. Melissa Weider (Fr) and Alyssa Taglia (So) finished the DGS scoring placing 26th and 27th respectively with times of 21:12 and 21:15.

The most impressive race of the day might have been in the JV Open race. As the meet moved along, the temperature continued to rise and when the race went off at nearly noon, it was extremely hot and humid. DGS dominated the competition placing 4 runner in the top 6 and 7 runners in the top 19. Scoring only 26 pts, the Mustangs easily outdistanced runner-up Downers North with 83 pts. Maggie Seitz (Sr) took 1st place overall with 20:12 and she was followed closely by Megan Albers (Jr) in 2nd with 20:36. Andrea Gilleran (Sr) and Mary Eterno (Jr) finished 5th and 6th with 21:05 and 21:13 respectively. Lauren Wong (Sr) was the final scorer finishing in 12th place running 21:41.

The Mustangs run next on Saturday (Sept 12) at the ‘First to the Finish’ Invite in Peoria.
