3 races…3 records!
The DGS varsity distance runners traveled to Batavia on Friday to compete in the Distance Madness meet. This a unique indoor meet where only 3 events were being raced (800m, 1600m, & 3200m). Some of the state’s best distance runners from more than 15 different schools converged to compete and race to fast times.
Fast times definitely happened as Mustang athletes combined to set new indoor school records in all 3 races. Michaela Hackbarth (Sr) started the record setting evening off by winning the 800m run with a time of 2:14.57. She lowered her own indoor school record by nearly 1 second and posted the #1 time in Illinois this season! In the 3200m run, Katie Stapleton (Jr) ran 11:02.09 in her 4th place effort. She lowered the mark set last year by all-state athlete Abby Kargol, who is running at the University of Minnesota this season. Michaela came back in the 1600m to run a great race, finishing 7th in an amazing field of all-state athletes. Her time of 5:09.86 lowered the previous record set by former DGS great, and current Kansas State runner, Amanda Thate.
Eleven other DGS athletes also competed at Batavia with 3 lifetime PR’s and 9 season best PR’s being set. All individual DGS results from the Mar.11 Batavia Distance Madness can be found on the Schedule/Results page.
