What is NXR? When the regular high school cross country season ends, Nike holds 8 regional cross country events around the U.S. (NXR). Downers Grove South is located in the group of states that attend the Midwest NXR regional and we will be participating again this year. All DGS cross country runners are invited to attend, HOWEVER, this is a serious race. If your daughter would like to attend they MUST still attend daily practices with the team until November 9th. It’s a fun opportunity to travel to a meet and spend the night with their teammates, but it is also a serious race. There are three races, an open race, a fresh/soph race, and a championship race, so everyone who signs up will run in one of the three races. The race distance is 5k. Since the race falls outside the IHSA calendar, the booster club is responsible for the organization of this meet.
Why? This meet gives the girls a chance to compete on an NCAA National Championship 5k Course against girls from IN, OH, IL, MI and MO. Our top runners will again be vying for one of the coveted invitations to the Nike Cross Nationals in Oregon. Nike sponsors the event and makes it really special. There is a pre-race ice cream social, a chance to meet world class Nike athletes and make new friends from other teams.
Where is it? LaVern Gibson Championship XC Course in Terre Haute, IN. Terre Haute is known as Cross Country Town USA. This LaVern Gibson course hosted the 2016 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship and is widely recognized as one of the top cross-country courses in the world. They have hosted 15 national championships at this course. The course is spectator friendly so it is easy to see your daughter at multiple places on the course.
When? We will drive down on Friday, Nov 15th so the girls have a chance to preview the course and/or arrive in Terre Haute for races starting mid-day Saturday, Nov 16th. We will stay at a local hotel overnight on Friday night. The athletes will room together. We also have a limited block of rooms reserved for parents. (See hotel information below). We return on Saturday after the races and the awards are concluded in the late afternoon (approx. 4:45pm ET departure).
Next Steps? Please fill out the registration form and participant waiver, and attach your check for $80 (made payable to Carrie Casella). You can turn in these forms/check to Kelsey Casella at practice or contact Carrie directly at firstname.lastname@example.org. Registration forms are due by Friday September 27th. We will take care of hotel reservations for the runners.
Parents, if you would like to attend the race, we have a limited number of rooms available at the Fairfield Inn and Suites in Terre Haute (475 E. Margaret Ave, Terre Haute, (812) 235-2444)). Please call them soon to make your reservation. The block of rooms is held under DOWNERS GROVE RUNNING CLUB and you must tell them that when you make the reservation. Please also let Heather Spang (email@example.com) know when you have reserved a room so we can keep track as the registration forms come in. If you don’t plan to stay overnight, you can still drive down on the day of the race to see your daughter. It takes approximately 3 ½ hours drive time to get to the course and don’t forget the time change!!
NXR is a great experience and we hope that you and your runner will join us!
