McNerney breaks DGS indoor 3200m record!

On Saturday, February 20th, Sophia McNerney (Jr) competed in the CYUP Misfits Invite. This was an open preseason competition held at the Gately Indoor Stadium in Chicago. Sophia entered the 3200m run, and the field of 30+ runners was divided into 3 sections. Based on her PR time of 11:08, Sophia was placed in the 2nd of 3 heats, while the fastest runners were placed in the 3rd heat. Sophia ran a patient, evenly paced race, not taking the lead until about 1000m into the race. From there she started to slowly pull away from the field. Sophia hit the 1 mile mark at roughly 5:25 and continued to increase her lead. She was able to finish with a good kick, negative split the race, and won her section in a new PR time of 10:48.25. Sophia’s time also held up as the 4th fastest time of the day in a strong overall field. Her new PR time proved to be 3 seconds faster than the previous DGS indoor school record held by DGS graduate (and current Iowa State standout), Brenna Cohoon. After running a PR 800m time two weeks ago, Sophia’s 3200m time is another indicator of great things to come once the IHSA track season officially begins in April. Meet results can be found on Athletic.net. It would be remiss not to acknowledge the 3200m race by Holly Johnson, an 8th grader at O’Neill Middle School. Holly ran in the same section as Sophia, finishing in 2nd to her, and finishing 9th in the overall field with an outstanding time of 11:14.86. Holly will be a freshman at DGS next fall.
