And the season begins…

We are just over 2 weeks into the 2017 season and its been a great start for the DGS Girls Cross Country team!

On Wednesday, August 23, the Mustangs defeated both Naperville Central and Oswego on both the JV and Varsity levels. In the first race of the day at O’Brien Park, Natalie Olsen (Sr) took the lead and never looked back, winning the 3.0 mile race in 20:51. She led a parade of Mustangs into the finish chute, as DGS had the first 6 finishers out of 85 total runners. Maya Scheck (Fr) was 2nd in 21:42, Meghan Stapleton (Fr) was 3rd (21:55), Katie Meyer (Sr) was 4th (22:02), Kailey Ferguson (Fr) was 5th (22:14), and Renee Nicholson (Fr) was 6th (22:17). Team scores were: DGS-15, NC-61, OSW-75.

In the Varsity race, Brenna Cohoon (So) led the entire race and finished 1st overall with a time of 18:25. She was followed closely by 3 more Mustangs, as DGS had the first 4 finishers. Erin Reidy (So) made a strong move at the 2-mile mark to move into 2nd place and held that position into the chute in 18:38. She was followed by Becky Versaskas (Jr) in 3rd (18:45), and Kennedy Warden (So) in 4th (18:51). Melissa Weidner (Jr) and Rebecca Diddia (Fr) ran closely together to finish in 12th and 13th places with 19;20 and 19:23. Olivia Duax (Jr) was the #7 finisher for DGS with 19:39 in 14th place. The varsity team scores were: DGS-21, NC-39, OSW-76.

DGS returns to O’Brien Park to take on Leyden on Monday, August 28 and then travels to Fenton HS next Saturday (Sept.2) for the first invitational meet of the season.
