The DGS girls track & field team placed 2nd out of 16 teams at the IHSA Lockport Sectional on Thursday night. Lincoln-Way East, the 4-time defending state champions, took 1st place with 132 points. DGS made a good run at the top team in the state, but came up a little short, scoring 107 points. The 3rd place team, Hinsdale Central, was a considerable ways back with 65 points. The Mustangs qualified 9 events to next week’s state meet that will be held in Charleston on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.

Maddie Manganiello (So) led the way in the field events, scoring in 3 different events and qualifying for state in one. She took 1st place in the long jump with an outstanding leap of 18′ 8.25″ to secure her spot at state. Maddie also placed 4th in the pole vault (8′ 9″) and 6th in the high jump (4′ 11″). Maddie currently has the longest jump in the state (19′ 6″) from last week’s conference meet.

On the track, both Shaliyah Dixon-Tucker (Sr) and Michaela Hackbarth (Sr) continued their stellar seasons and qualified in multiple events. Shaliyah took 1st place in the 100m hurdles and reclaimed the state’s fastest time with 14.23. She came back minutes later to tie Kayla Hylton (LWE) for 1st place in the 100m dash with a new school record time of 12.05. Shaliyah also finished 3rd in the 200m dash, but qualified for state with her time of 25.55. Michaela lowered her own state best time in the 800m run with a 1st place finish in 2:12.19. She also came back on a short rest and took 1st place in the 400m dash with a time of 57.90.

Katie Stapleton (Jr) took 2nd place in the 3200m run (11:26.62) amidst tough, windy conditions to punch her ticket to state. Nicole Muccianti (Jr) placed 5th in the 100m dash and qualified for state by running a great 12.56 time. Muccianti also led of the state qualifying 2nd place 4x100m relay team that included Soren Umali (Jr), Arianna Finley (Sr), and Dixon-Tucker with a time of 48.75.

Every Sectional meet is fraught with tears of joy and disappointment, qualifications and near-misses. This meet was no exception. Despite not qualifying, many of those efforts still scored valuable points for the team. Sonja Renowden (Jr) had a huge PR in the long jump (17′ 3.5″) to finish 4th, but narrowly missed qualifying. Becky Versaskas (Fr) ran a great 800m race in 2:21.76, just missing the qualifying standard. Soren Umali (Jr) placed 3rd in the 300m hurdles (48.15) and 4th in the 100m hurdles (15.74) scoring important team points, but unfortunately not advancing to state.

Melissa Weidner (Fr) placed 4th in the windy 3200m run in 11:39.98. Nicole Muccianti (Jr) placed 6th in the 200m dash (26.32) coming from one of the slower heats. Katie Stapleton (Jr) battled back in the 1600m run to score a 6th place in 5:28.03.  The 4x200m relay team of Alexus Allen (So), Sonja Renowden (Jr), Arianna Finley (Sr), and Nicole Muccianti (Jr) placed 6th with a season best time of 1:46.23. The 4x400m relay team of Lauren Wong (Sr), Sonja Renowden (Jr), Becky Versaskas (Fr), and Michaela Hackbarth (Sr) placed 4th in 4:10.29. And the 4x800m relay team of Kelley Hackbarth (So), Kara Petersen (Jr), Gillian Thomas (So), and Olivia Duax (Fr) improved on their 7th place seed to place 4th in 10:04.19.

Overall, this was a great Sectional meet by our team as we near the end of one the best seasons in DGS history!
